First off lets get a basic overview of what the terms mean.
Note that I do have well over 30 years of gaming experience, and the only new term in this bunch is PVPVE. Still lets begin shall we.
PVP is pretty straight forward. To put it simple it is literally
player vs player, and the easiest of the three to understand. Basically what this means is the following.
PVE is also a pretty straight forward term. It basically is the Player vs the game, without having to worry about being attacked by other players. What this means is listed below.
Okay so this one is hard to understand for alot of folks, even those that think they know what it is. As it combines the above two. Which by there own nature conflict each other, as one is player vs player, and the other prevents it.
Largely this is correct as it is by nature a conflict, and false even by it’s own wording. In the end though this term should only apply to clustered servers, where there is a mix of PVP and PVE servers.
Now some think that allowing tribe wars on a PVE server might make the term valid. However this is NOT a guide on game mechanics, but the terminology being used. Also in if you think about it allowing tribe wars on a PVE server is quite simply allowing for PVP to happen. It’s not a server wide event that affects everyone, which is what this guide is about.
All I can say about servers that advertise that there PVPVE is to be careful about them. There is alot of grey area here, and no one has a meaning for it that is entirely false or true.
Game Modes
Game Modes are different ways to play Ark: Survival Evolved.
The current Ark game mode can only be changed by the server admin. The commands to change the game mode on your server are available here.

Available Game Modes [ ]
Player vs Player [ ]
Player vs. Player (also known as PvP or PvPvE) is a mode where players are able to deal damage to or kill each other. In PvP players can also damage or destroy another tribe’s buildings or kill their dinos.
In ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile, 
Industrial Grinders are disabled.
By default, PvP is enabled.
Player vs Environment [ ]
Player vs. Environment (PvE) is a mode where players are unable to directly damage another player. Players also can’t damage other tribe’s dinos or structures. However, there is a PvE demolish timer that allows destruction of other tribe’s structures if no member of the tribe has logged in for a specific amount of time.
On these servers, there is only one or two threats to survival. The first threat is the environment and if you so happen to be on an unofficial server then the second threat to survival could be Admin(s)
PvE is available as a Server Parameter at startup and by default is set to false. To change this parameter, the server has to be restarted.
PvX (Mobile) [ ]
PvX is a game mode exclusive to ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile. In PvX, the aspects of PvP and PvE are combined into one map.
PvX Clock (Mobile) [ ]
PvX Clock is a version of PvX with a smaller central PvP zone but a small segment of the PvP zone that reaches the shores of The Island rotates hourly. The same rules in PvX apply in PvX Clock.
King of the Hill (Mobile) [ ]
King of the Hill is a game mode exclusive to ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile. In King of the Hill, tribes compete to gain control of the Volcano. After a 2 week period, the tribe who has conquered the Volcano will be rewarded with a Tek blueprint, 100 × 
Eery Element, and a free server rental. Then all structures and tames will be wiped.
Ascendant PvP (Mobile) [ ]

Ascendant PvP is a game mode exclusive to ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile. Survivors who are level 100 can purchase an 
Ascendant Transfer Ticket from the In-Game Store, allowing them to transfer their data and premium items to an Ascendant PvP server. All survivors start from level 1 upon downloading their character.
Hardcore [ ]
All game modes can be played in Hardcore mode. When a player dies in the Hardcore, they lose almost all levels and respawn only with 9 levels go up.
ARKpocalypse (PC) [ ]
Both PvP and PvE game modes can be played in ARKpocalypse mode. On ARKpocalypse servers, the server resets automatically after a month, with an in-game countdown and dramatic meteor impact.
By default, ARKpocalypse is disabled.
This gamemode takes place at a faster pace, as it has multiplies all rates (harvesting, taming etc.) x3. This mode is very good for new players or people looking to play for a short period of time.
Specialty Servers [ ]
Speciality servers are alternate game modes that last for a limited amount of time. Each new theme will bring on a new set of challenges different from that of servers currently available. [1]
Small Tribes [ ]
Small Tribes servers are a type of specialty server that limit the tribe size to 6 players and alliances are not allowed. Server rates are 2.5x (harvest, taming, experience) and are not be affected by Evolution Events. They also have 2x maturation, 2x egg hatching, 2x gestation and 50% reduced mating interval. [2]
Conquest [ ]
Conquest PvP servers are a type of specialty server that focus on big tribes and big battles. These servers have 2x rates (unaffected by Evolution Events) and have a player cap of 100. Tribes are limited to 25 players max, alliances are disabled, and 36 servers will exist within the Conquest cluster. [3] [4]
Classic PvP [ ]
Classic PvP is a new competitive player experience for PC players which focuses on the PvP experience from the days of old. These servers include:

Primitive [ ]
Both PvP and PvE game modes can be played in Primitive mode. When Primitive is enabled, the engram skill tree is missing everything from the advanced/modern tier except for saddles. High tier gear and structures are disabled. This includes fabricated items, all ranged weapons (excluding crossbows, Bows, and slingshots). By default, Primitive is disabled.
Survival of the Fittest [ ]
Survival of the Fittest was a special game mode that was introduced to Ark in Patch 200.0 and is now a standalone game. Its gameplay heavily differs from normal gameplay. The goal of the game mode is to become the last man standing by killing all other competitors on the island. In Survival of the Fittest, the game settings are modified to fit a faster paced style of gameplay.
Survival of the Fittest takes place on special servers.
Single Player [ ]
Single Player is a mode that allows survivors to play ARK offline as singleplayer. On the Xbox One and PS4 you can use the splitscreen function to play with a friend.

The components for my new PC will be arriving in a couple days and I’m really looking forward to playing Ark for the first time. The first thing I’ll need to do though is select a server to play on and griefers seems to be a real problem in the game.
A PvE server would then seem like my best choice but from what I understand. you still get lots of griefers on PvE servers.
So my question is. do I start on an official server? an unofficial one? PvE? PvP? PvPvE? Where can I go to build my base/do my own thing with just the normal/default settings for the most part without any fear of griefers? (that isn’t 100% single player)
I recommend a pvpve server.
You can battle people if needed. It is regulated by admins. Pvpve servsers tend to be 2 to 6x which is a nice spead over the official servers.
The base game was made to be played with many people in a tribe. Playing with 1 to 3 people in a tribe on an official will get you raided amd left with nothing.
Hello, Experienced admin and player here, 650+ hours on this profile 300 of those hours as a admin, on my second profile I have 240 hours of PvP player/admin experience. I just came back from a long break to return so I have a fresh and brand new server.
A little about me; I’m a retired veteran and a beginner motovlogger. I live life for myself and do the things in life that make me the happiest and most satisfied no matter the cost of money or harm it’ll bring me.
I’ve switched a few things around already on the server and I’ll list them below. I’m online almost all the time if not I’m within reaching distance of my computers and I have Arkon set up on my phone (Mobile Server Control more or less) so if I’m out I can still update/monitor even away from home. I’ve been an admin on Arma3 and a server admin for dayZ as well. I’d rather not have anyone that’ll start drama and keep my server a mature enviroment.
I have community events that will involve PvP and PvE requirements to complete and the rewards vary between the tasks/events.
-Dedicated areas for trading.
-If player/tribe is offline for more than a week without notice their base/dinos will be destroyed to make room for new players/former players looking to expand.
My new server is a PvPvE. The things I’ve messed with so far would be:
-0.5 from 1 water consumption
-0.6 from 1 food consumption
-harvest multiplier (how much you get from plants etc.) from 1 to 1.2
-wild (not tamed) dino’s damage multiplier increased from 1 to 1.4
-EXP multipler was set to 1.8 from 1
-I increased the level cap due to the ammount of new engrams coming out from 65 to 150 (player) 113 to 200 (dino).
-I set the day and night cycles from 1.0 to 1.7 so longer days and nights.
-Show player position is turned on as well as third person.
Haven’t messed with anything else, as I said brand new server, just started it this morning.
Some basic ground rules I’d just like to be followed out of courtesy for fellow players and myself will be; No looting/theiving/demo of bases while people are offline, PvP Tribe war winners get a special item from me, No killing other people’s dinos while their offline, and don’t camp more than 2 cave(s)/metal mountain(s). NO DRAMA, drama will equal an instant ban from me as well as «hackers».
