Система образования в США включает в себя 4 уровня образования: начальное, среднее, высшее и постдипломное.

Начальная школа в США: из академических предметов преподаются арифметика, чтение и письмо. Естественные и общественные науки почти не даются.
Средняя школа называется Middle School (6-8 классы) или Junior High School (7-9 классы). Сюда поступают с 11 лет. В это время школьники изучают набор обязательных предметов (математика, английский язык, естественно-научные предметы, обществознание, физкультура и искусство) и несколько предметов на выбор (иностранный язык, искусство и технологии, журналистика, риторика, театральное искусство и многие другие).
Выпускники школ, работающих по системе образования США, в 8 классе получают диплом High School Сertificate. С 9 по 12 класс школьники готовятся к сдаче выпускных экзаменов, после которых они получают High School Graduation Diploma. Желающие получить высшее образование могут поступать в колледжи или университеты, где получают за 4 года степень бакалавра.
Оценка учащегося по тому или иному предмету складывается не только на основании результатов тестов, но и из отношения к учебе, участия в жизни класса и т. д.
Государственными экзаменами являются SAT и ACT — общие академические тесты на общие способности, знание математики и уровень языковых навыков, которые одновременно являются вступительными в колледжи и университеты.
Для получения диплома необходимо получить около 100 кредитных часов по 7-8 предметам и набрать от 20 до 24 кредитов (в зависимости от штата), чтобы получить доступ к высшему образованию. Помимо этого, необходимо сдать SAT или ACT. Если английский не является родным языком, то нужно пройти тест TOEFL или IELTS.
Академический год в США делится не на четверти или триместры как в Европе, а на полугодия – семестры.
Отличается в США и система оценок: это не привычная нам 5-балльная, а 100-балльная система или буквенное обозначение (где A – высший, наилучший балл, а F – неудовлетворительная оценка). В старших классах большинство школ переходят на систему кредитов (зачетных единиц). От размера заработанных кредитов зависит не только возможность перейти на следующий учебный уровень, но и наличие и размер стипендии.

Академические кредиты американские школьники начинают зарабатывать начиная с 9 или 10 класса (в зависимости от штата). Обучение ведется как по обязательным дисциплинам, так и по факультативным.
