Главный признак ритейла — большое разнообразие товаров и услуг, которые можно приобрести в одном месте. Зачастую люди покупают больше товаров в одной торговой точке, чем они планировали, благодаря приемам стимулирования продаж. Для покупателей ритейл привлекательный из-за того, что в таких магазинах можно найти много вариантов товара, сделать более взвешенный выбор и приобрести именно то, что хочется.
Ритейл отличается от других принципов организации торговли следующими приемами, которые позволяют сбывать большие объемы товара по розничным ценам.

RETAIL SALES
An aggregated measure of the sales of retail goods over a stated time period, typically based on a data sampling that is extrapolated to model an entire country. In the U.S., the retail sales report is a monthly economic indicator compiled and released by the Census Bureau and the Department of Commerce. The report covers the previous month, and is released about two weeks after the month-end. Comparisons are made against historical data; year-over-year comparisons are the most-reported metric because they account for the seasonality of consumer-based retail.
The retail sales report captures in-store sales as well as catalog and other out-of-store sales. The report also breaks down sales figures into groups such as food and beverages, clothing, and autos. The results are often presented two ways: with and without auto sales being counted, because their high sticker price can add extra volatility to the data.
Retail sales figures are vital to stock investors as a whole, and especially to those who invest in retail companies directly. They are also are a big component of total gross domestic product (GDP) in the United States, so any extended drop-offs in retail spending can trigger a recession by lowering tax receipts and forcing companies to reduce head counts.
As far as broad economic indicators go, the retail sales report is one of the most timely, providing data that is only a few weeks old. Individual retail companies often give their own sales figures around the same time per month, and their stocks can be very volatile around this time as investors process the data.

Розничные продажи в США (US Retail Sales) – это один из наиболее важных индикаторов состояния экономики США. На 80% ВВП США обеспечен конечным потреблением, подавляющая часть которого происходит от продаж в розницу и оказание услуг. К тому же показатель публикуется довольно оперативно (примерно в середине месяца, следующего за отчетным), так что информация на момент публикации еще далеко не полностью подсчитана участниками рынка и экономистами от других, неофициальных, публикаций, по большей части недельных. Индикатор розничных продаж публикуется с коррекцией на сезонные факторы, праздники и количество рабочих дней, но при этом без корректировки на изменения цен. Исследование проводится на основе изучения информации от 5000 компаний, которые составляют более 65% от общего объема торговли.
Часто участники рынка рассматривают не только общие показатели розничных продаж, но смотрят на стержневые или основные данные, из расчета которых исключены продажи автомобилей. Такие цифры менее волатильны и отражают в большей степени спрос на товары и услуги питания, менее подверженные резким колебаниям от месяца к месяцу из-за высокой стоимости автомобилей. Кроме того, набирает популярность индикатор, из расчета которого вычтены помимо авто, также и продажи на бензоколонках. Это связано с высокой волатильность цен на топливо в последние годы, которая в значительной степени искажает общую картину потребительской активности в стране.
Уточним, что рост показателя (а скорее даже, превышение прогноза) благоприятно отражаются на рынках, но при этом могут подстегивать как рост доллара, так и его продажи. Доллар будет склонен расти, если ФРС настроен провести ужесточение кредитно-денежной политики. Если же на рынках царит уверенность в том, что Федеральный Резерв будет придерживаться своей текущей политики или даже ее смягчать, то рост продаж, скорей вызовет рост спроса на рисковые активы, происходящий в том числе и в виде продажи долларов. Как следствие, USD может падать на сильных данных.
Стоит также отметить наличие сезонности, несмотря на то, что ряд является сезонно-скорректированным. Некоторые факторы скользят по календарю (например, Пасха и т.п.), являются одноразовыми (налоговые послабления или ужесточения) или же непредсказуемыми (воздействие плохой погоды).
