Industry Insights
Rystad Energy’s assessment of the COP26 summit consensus is that the last-minute compromises can be seen as overwhelmingly positive towards averting critical levels of global warming. Our data-driven forecasts model different climate scenarios and, up until the Glasgow Climate Pact, our research pointed to a likely outcome of 1.8°C. However, while we will not change our base case until further evidence justifies such a move, the commitments by global leaders to cut methane emissions and reduce deforestation, alongside faster than expected solar PV manufacturing capacity additions and EV penetration, could be a recipe for limiting the temperature rise to 1.6°C versus pre-industrial levels. Global oil production is slowly recovering towards pre-Covid-19 levels, but in West Africa the pandemic is set to leave lasting effects. This important region for sweet crude oil production faces numerous challenges as it strives to heal from the pandemic, including underinvestment, a lack of infill drilling at mature fields, and infrastructure that is either ageing or threatened, a Rystad Energy analysis showed. The recent rally in LNG prices in Europe and Asia has dramatically widened the economic incentive to switch from natural gas to oil in power generation. Steep carbon regulations and operational constraints limit Europe’s ability to burn oil in power plants, but Asia has more flexibility. If the gap between LNG and oil prices remains wide, Asia is set to boost oil demand by 400,000 barrels per day on average over the next two quarters, a Rystad Energy report shows. Они при этом зафиксировали заметный рост объявлений о запуске проектов в сфере солнечной энергетики. И количество солнечных энергостанций достигло рекордного значения, увеличившись в три раза, а мощность ветроэнергетических установок в текущем году выросла вдвое.
Также, по данным Rystad, охватывающими период с начала года до ноября включительно, в этом году было объявлено о запуске водородных проектов общей мощностью в 245 ГВт, что в шесть раз больше, чем в прошлом году. Большая их часть будет относиться к локальным кластерам, таким как в Мавритании и Казахстане, уточняют они.
Отрасль ВИЭ сейчас испытывает значительные трудности, однако только в краткосрочной перспективе, полагают эксперты. Обязательства стран снижать выбросы углекислого газа в атмосферу будут поддерживать развитие отрасли в будущем. Jarand Rystad
Jarand Rystad founded Rystad Energy in 2004 and has, since its inception, managed the company. Jarand has extensive experience in oil and gas and energy strategy advisory work from his long tenure with both McKinsey & Company and Rystad Energy. He has led a number of strategy projects for international oil and gas, oilfield service and energy-related companies. Jarand has also worked with governments and international organizations on topics related to the global energy agenda, and he actively advises investors on deal screening, transactions and portfolio management. Prior to McKinsey and Company, Jarand worked for Kvaerner Engineering and as a research scientist within Industrial Economics, gaining wide expertise in statistics and programming. According to the Financial Times, Jarand is «one of the most cited petroleum analysts in the industry» and has been the keynote speaker at numerous international conferences. His areas of expertise include energy and E&P strategy, energy scenarios and all aspect of the Energy Transition, renewables, asset and company transactions, macro analysis, and oil service industry analysis.
Jarand has engaged in the development of an Energy Scenario Database describing the changes in the global energy mix to 2100. Each scenario is described in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and consequences for global warming, building on the IPCC AR6 report. He has also been instrumental in the development of methodologies used to estimate annual energy capacity additions needed and the required associated investments, with a particular emphasis on solar and wind. Understanding efficiency and losses related to existing and new energy technologies has also been focus of Jarand’s work, including deep dives into hydrogen, batteries and CCS.
Jarand holds a M.Sc. degree in Physics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, where he majored with a thesis on asteroseismology. He also has an academic background in philosophy and has been the leader and founder of various organizations.
